The Weight of Silence — Why Success Felt Empty
Q (expanded from Lee’s second question): What led you to leave a successful corporate career and return to art?
For many years, I dreamed of leaving the business world behind to return to my first love—art. But as a single mother, the financial burden was mine to carry. I needed stability for my daughter and myself, and art always seemed like a distant dream. It felt as if I was separated from my true self by an invisible glass wall.
Even as I climbed the corporate ladder and achieved professional success, I began to feel a paradoxical emptiness. The silence of success can be deafening. It was this sensation that inspired my still life Weight of Silence—a reminder that silence carries its own heaviness. When all is quiet, the voice of your soul becomes unmistakable, calling you to honour your deepest truth.
At the time, my life felt defined by structure without colour, weight without freedom. I was living in black and white when I longed for vibrancy and authenticity. That disconnect created a burden heavier than any professional challenge.
Acknowledging the “weight of silence” was the beginning of change. It was the moment I realised that continuing to ignore my true calling was no longer possible.
