London as a Catalyst for My Artistic Journey
Q (expanded from Lee’s first question): How did moving to London influence your artistic path?
When I first moved to London during the financial crisis, it was a practical decision—seeking stability and new career opportunities outside Egypt. At that time, the Egyptian economy was under immense strain, eventually leading to the 2011 revolution. London became a place of refuge and new beginnings.
What I didn’t expect was how deeply the city would shape my artistic voice. It’s where I transitioned from corporate leadership into fully embracing art. Here, I found the space and opportunity to merge my Egyptian roots and my American influences into something new. London gave me perspective: it allowed me to honour my cultural past while creating work that feels truly universal.
It’s also where I built a family life with my husband Francois and where my daughter Malak-Indigo found her own artistic voice in music. That sense of belonging has grounded me. London became the place where I could finally listen to my inner calling—to step away from the “weight of silence” in corporate life and pursue painting full-time.
Today, London isn’t just where I live—it’s a constant source of inspiration. Its cultural diversity, history, and creative energy fuel my evolution as an artist.
